There was a time, not so very long ago, when all baby nurseries were decorated in realtively the same fashion. The paint was usually soft pink, baby blue, mint green, or pale yellow. A wallpaper border of either teddy bears, ballerinas, or clowns adorned the perimeter and matching stuffed animals were placed on shelves to "dress the room up". The room usually did not reflect the tastes of the family and was very unlike the decor of the rest of the house. These days the sky is the limit for baby nursery decoration!
While the nursery is definitely meant to be for the baby, there is no reason why the parents cannot enjoy it too and have it reflect the style of the rest of the house. For the walls, pretty much any color goes. In fact bold colors can be quite striking and stimulating for a child's mind. Earthy colors are also very popular and can have a soothing effect.
Decor does not need to be overtly "baby-ish". Big geometric wall decals can add a lot of fun to a room. Items can be re-purposed, such as hanging a chandellier for lighting in a girl's room, or a magazine rack or ladder attached to a wall to hold children's books. How about painting a tree mural and then hanging an actual birdhouse in it. You can also use chalkboard paint so that the walls become ever-changing works or art.
Remember, use your imagination and have fun!
